Campus U Card Access | Facilities Management

The UMD campus has fully converted to U Card access. U Card access is the standard for all University of Minnesota campuses to enter secured areas.

All faculty, staff, and students will need a U Card for electronic door access. You are eligible to receive a free replacement U Card every 5 years. Please contact the U Card Office.

If you have any problems with your U Card access, please contact UMD Facilities Management, 218-726-8262.

Requesting U Card Access: Each department has identified one or two staff (DFR) that have been approved to order keys/access through the UMD FM Online Key Forms. Please continue to request access through your Department's Designated Facility Representative (DFR).

UCards

Replacement U Cards:

If you are currently eligible for a replacement U Card you may be subject to a $30 replacement fee if your card is lost, damaged or stolen. The U Card staff will determine if a fee will apply.

After replacing a card

Any door access you had managed by the University's central system will return within 4 hours.

Payments and fees

There is a $30 replacement fee for cards less than 5 years old.
Departments can pay for their employee's replacement U Card at their discretion. To pay for an employee's replacement U Card, please email [email protected] with your department's EFS number and the employee's name and ID #.

Waiving the replacement fee

The U Card Office will waive the replacement fee if:

Your U Card was stolen and you can provide us with a police report number.
Your U Card is 5+ years old.
Your U Card’s smart chip fails (undamaged cards only).
You have had a legal name change.
You are switching roles (i.e. student to staff).

Legal Name Changes

Staff and Faculty – Legal name needs to be properly updated in the PeopleSoft system 24 hours prior to coming to the U Card Office. You must return your previous U Card to receive a free replacement card.
Student – Legal name change needs to be properly updated with OneStop Student Services 24 hours prior to coming to the U Card Office. You must return your previous U Card to receive a free replacement card.

If you have changed your preferred name and would like a new U Card, you will be charged a $30 replacement fee unless you fall under a replacement fee exception.

Store your U Card in a protective sleeve or case
Keep your U Card in a secure place
Monitor your U Card account balances
Carry your U card with you on campus

Do Not

Punch a hole in your U Card
Lend your U Card to anyone
Scratch the magnetic stripe
Put your U Card near a magnet or cell phone
